Germany aims to deepen cooperation with Nigeria, recognising its key role in Africa and significant economic potential. Discussions between Ministers focused on expanding trade, particularly in critical raw materials, and addressing migration challenges through collaborative solutions.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has described Nigeria as a key partner for Berlin in Africa, reaffirming Germany’s commitment to strengthening cooperation across economic, political, and security sectors. “We just want to deepen our cooperation,” he stated after meeting with Nigerian Foreign Minister Yusuf Tuggar.
Wadephul emphasized Africa’s growing importance, calling it “the continent of the future,” and highlighted the vast economic potential, particularly in critical raw materials like rare earths. He encouraged German companies to invest more in Nigeria, citing Volkswagen as a successful example.
On migration, both ministers agreed to work closely to address challenges linked to irregular migration and enhance cooperation on shared security concerns.
Tuggar noted that Nigeria is already Germany’s second-largest trading partner in sub-Saharan Africa and expressed optimism about expanding ties in areas like energy, infrastructure, and education.
The visit builds on strong bilateral foundations, including cultural cooperation marked by the return of the Benin Bronzes in 2022 and ongoing collaboration through the German-Nigerian Binational Commission. Germany also supports Nigeria’s security efforts through training and stabilization projects.
Energy cooperation remains a priority, with both nations identifying it as a key driver of future economic growth.
