According to the World Bank, about 41% of Nigeria’s population is unable to access uninterrupted electricity to fulfil basic needs. As the largest economy in Africa with a thriving start-up ecosystem, energy is crucial to Nigeria’s economic growth and human development.

The goal of ETHLagos is to leverage blockchain technology to create sustainable solutions for communities and add value to the Nigerian energy sector. Blockchain systems could, for example, facilitate peer to peer trading or enable transparent data analysis in decentralised power grids, helping consumers to save on cost. Especially when applied to renewable energy generation, blockchain can further assist in incentivising Nigeria to move towards wider and greener power coverage.

ETHLagos promises to be a different kind of hackathon. With its sustainable outlook, winning projects will be supported and mentored after the hackathon with the aim of evolving into sustainable projects. ETHLagos will feature weeklong activities including workshops, conference sessions and coding. Attendees will come from all walks of life including coders, energy engineers, entrepreneurs, local, continental and international blockchain community members; start-ups, corporations and so many more.
