Development partnerships with the private sector (Strategic Alliances)

Development partnerships with the private sector are projects in which private companies and development cooperation organisations pool their strengths and work together in developing and emerging countries. In this way they advance development in the partner countries and bring about sustainable improvements in living conditions.

The partners share responsibilities, costs and risks. In the programme, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH works with private companies on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), entering into development partnerships that serve both economic and development-policy goals.

Strategic alliances go one step further

GIZ forms strategic alliances with German and European companies to initiate projects with a particularly broad impact. They are generally transnational in scope, their focus is relevant to an entire sector and they bring together global players from trade and industry, governments and NGOs, and other national and international organisations.

General criteria

All development partnerships must satisfy some general criteria: the project is compatible with the defined development goals and objectives of the German Government; the cooperation enables both partners to achieve their respective objectives more quickly, more efficiently and more cost-effectively; the project must not distort competition; the company must make a contribution of at least 50 per cent of overall costs; the private partner cannot realise the development partnership without the public partner, and the activities are not legally prescribed. While development partnerships may receive maximum promotional public funding of EUR 200,000, strategic alliances must have a minimum volume of EUR 750,000. Up to 50 per cent of this may come from public funds.
